SADC Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (SACREEE)

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (SACREEE) was established by the SADC Member States in 2015 to contribute towards increased access to modern energy services and improved energy security across the SADC Region through the promotion of market based uptake of renewable energy (RE) and energy efficient (EE) technologies and energy services. The SACREEE Secretariat is based in Windhoek, Namibia.

The mandate of SACREEE includes

• To support the achievements of the sustainable development objectives of SADC Member States by promoting the use of RE&EE technologies and energy services.
• To support the Region's sustainable development objectives through: resource mobilisation, policy, quality assurance, capacity building and knowledge management, communication, promoting investments in RE&EE projects and programmes.

SACREEE has been mandated by the SADC Member States to play a key role in the implementation of the recently adopted Southern Africa Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Strategy and Action plan (REEESAP).

SACREEE's focusses on Programs and projects that can best be implemented at regional level. These actions include harmonisation of policy approaches, regulation and standards, investment coordination, and regional capacity building and knowledge building measures. The technology scope includes all renewable energies, which are viable within the region, but in the case of hydropower is be limited to below 30MW. In the energy efficiency field, SACREEE focusses on industrial, domestic and building design and construction applications.
